Because Javascript is a continuous source of unintentional surprises I have configured all [but one] of my browsers so that Scripting is deactivated.
On the iPhone this leads to Google presenting no more than a white background, which isn't that productive. The redirect and the Javascript dependency affects only Google's start page though. If you employ one of the many alternative search forms everything works as expected.
